Modern Farmhouse Tips Its Hat to Silo Style

Wendell Burnette Architects took inspiration from grain silos in their design of this modern farmhouse in Wisconsin.  At a distance, Field House’s galvanized zinc sides and two-story rectangular mass look like a purely functional building nestled in fields of corn.

You only notice the home’s modern, artistic style when you get closer.  One side of the home has two bands of windows that provide sweeping views of the prairie.  This focus on the scenery continues through most of the home’s stylish rooms.

The kitchen contrasts light brick walls with warm wood cabinets and sleek built-in appliances. The design team picked up the metallic of the appliances in other touches of the room, making it feel put together.  At the same time, open shelves display an eclectic mix of cool, personal items.

An office on one side of the home features a mix of unique pieces, including a note paper chandelier.  Most notably, however, a silo ladder climbs one of the walls of the office into a hidden observatory for stargazing. [Photography by Bill Timmerman and courtesy of dezeen Magazine]
